Hi dear Wanderers,

ℹ️
It slipped a bit below the radar last summer but Tesla is quietly trying to enter the business of selling energy to consumers in the UK. A potentially big strategic jump that could very well bring in more margins than trying to sell a fast ageing lineup of vehicles.
💡
The American company is most known as a (or THE) supplier of electric cars, but they have serious side businesses in solar panels and stationary batteries. With all that manufacturing prowess for the production of the building blocks of a fast electrifying world, they are hungrily eyeing Big Electricity. If there is one sector that is even slower to evolve than automotive it must be energy. Tesla already has an energy generation license to provide electricity wholesale in the UK market and are now making the jump to enter UK households and businesses as a retailer. The license is not in their pocket yet, these processes tend to take many months. But the intent is clear.
💡
I'm no big fan of Elon and I handed back my Tesla fanboy membership a long time ago, but you have to give it to them, they keep pushing the boundaries. Moving things along usually takes some serious prodding and that's what I hope they will do. Sure, there must be good reasons why the electricity market is super regulated. It's core to our economies, safety is paramount and our lives come to a screeching halt when things go wrong. Just look at what Spain went through a couple of months ago. On the other hand we also know that cleaning up our fossil fuel addiction and getting us as fast as possible to a more flexible and greener energy world will take a serious pace of innovation and change. Shaking up the cozy oligopoly of energy suppliers and getting them to feel a sense of urgency can't hurt.
